Through the project, the communities decided to brand their rice as Wagas Dati, meaning ‘our rice’ in the Dusun-Tindal Language.

This brand unites the vision of the four villages we work in (Kg. Tinuhan, Kg. Lapasan Ulu, Kg. Timbou and Kg. Wangkod) and puts the communities on an entrepreneurial journey towards becoming a producer of sustainably grown Sabah heirloom rice.

Food security will always be our main priority. Once the farmers have taken care of the food (rice) needs of his/her families, their remaining rice is pooled together between the four villages and sold as Wagas Dati.

Farmers learn how to build a brand, develop fair trade prices of their rice, package and sell their product, and share our stories.

With Sabah’s rice Self Sufficiency Level (SSL) at a low 25% and many urban consumers buying imported local rice for their daily consumption, Wagas Dati hopes to make itself known and accessible to local urban consumers, to tell the story of local and champion choosing local. By cause and effect, we hope that increased demand in local rice will inspire the younger generation to keep our rice planting cultures alive with responsible planting methods, raising both our self-sufficiency levels and health as a state.

It is our intention to bring stories from the field and of the past to our present and towards an optimistic tomorrow.

Wagas Dati is...

Responsibly Grown

Farmers learn sustainable planting methods such as the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) which uses less seeds and water, making organic fertilizers, and composting to reduce carbon emissions and use of agricultural chemicals.

Fully Traceable

We work with farmers closely so we can tell you exactly who grew your rice! All profits go directly to the farmer, supporting local livelihoods and economies.

Produced in small-scale (heirloom varieties)

Our farmers grow Sabah heirloom rice varieties passed down within the generations of rice planting communities. They have full ownership of the production and do not plant for commercial sale. Majority of our rice require a 6 month planting season, so we only harvest once a year.

Our varieties

We grow a variety of Sabah Heirloom rices such as

Rice is not just "brown" and "white"

Unpolished rice (aka "brown" rice)

This is the least processed form of rice, and for that reason, it is also called 'whole grain' rice.

With only the inedible husk removed, the bran and germ layers remain intact. This is where the fibre and nutrients live, containing essential minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, protein and more.

When cooked, unpolished rice has a hearty and chewy texture.

Polished rice (aka "white" rice)

The bran and germ layer is milled/polished away leaving a white kernel.

This refined grain has a longer shelf-life because the oils in the bran layer is removed.

When cooked, polished rice has a soft and often, starchy texture

Semi-polished rice

The bran and germ layer is partially milled/polished away, leaving some parts of the white kernel exposed and some of the colored bran and germ layer intact.

When cooked, semi-polished rice retains it’s color with a textured taste.
